Our Flooring Company’s Guide to Pet-Friendly Flooring

Our Flooring Company’s Guide to Pet-Friendly Flooring

If you’ve just bought a new puppy home, they’re probably not quite housebroken yet. Teaching them to potty outside can be a tough task, and there’s a strong chance your floors are going to suffer the consequences! The same goes for cats and kittens; it takes time to litter train them and prevent ‘accidents’ from occurring.

But even when your pets grow up and take well to their training, they can track all kinds of dirt (and insects) into the house from the outside, and their claws can ruin the floor within a year or so.

That’s why we highly recommend installing pet-friendly flooring while you’ve still got time! We’re a flooring company with 25 years of experience; we know just how cost-effective it is to replace the floors in your home in preparation for a life with pets. In that time, we’ve serviced thousands of homes - many of whom were in need of pet-friendly flooring to ensure their kittens, pooches, and bunnies didn’t leave marks, scratches, or stains.

As such, our company has put together a guide to pet-friendly flooring: what it is, what you can get, and how to install it. Check it out down below.

What is Pet-Friendly Flooring?

When it comes to being a pet owner, the last thing you’re likely to consider is the floor in your own home. However, the quality of this floor will enhance the experience for both you and your beloved pet as you get settled in together. But what qualities does a flooring material need to have to be considered ‘pet friendly’?

Firstly, it needs to be durable. Many flooring types are ‘scratch resistant’, meaning no matter how long or sharp your pet’s claws are, they won’t pierce the material and leave a mark.

Second, the material needs to be safe for your pet to walk on. Anything that’s too slippery or has the chance to snag and catch on their claws, collar, or toys could result in injury.

Lastly, the flooring type needs to be resistant to moisture. At the very least, any pee puddles that get left on it need to take time to soak in, which will give you ample opportunity to clean up the mess. Now you know what pet-friendly means, let’s go through some of the best pet-friendly floor types that could be installed in your home.

The Best Pet-Friendly Floor Types on the Market

Laminate

If you’re mostly concerned about cat claws ruining the look of your floor, opt for laminate. Laminate is a wonderfully durable material and comes in both smooth and textured varieties. If you’re worried about your pet slipping, as they tend to get ‘the zoomies’ a lot, you can buy a laminate variety that provides more grip for them to hold into.

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl both looks and feels good underfoot, for both human and animal feet alike. It’s also incredibly water resistant, so you can be sure no moisture will leak through or soak in. Plus, it’s pretty good for fending off scratches and markings. You also won’t need to worry about any cleaning jobs, as vinyl tends to be ‘wipe clean’.

Carpet

Carpets aren't usually great for households with pets. They’re more likely to soak up urine and get caked in dirt and mud, and if your pets end up with fleas or ticks, they can easily jump off and hide themselves in the carpet.

However, if you’re determined to have carpet in your home, you’re still in luck here!

Thin, short/low pile carpets can have a place in a pet-friendly home. They’re less likely to hide critters, it’s easier to spot stains, and there’s less material for absorbing moisture and locking in the smell. Also, carpet has a lot more texture to it, which makes it great for holding claws without any problems.
